Managing Your Files

With current technology managing paper files is dead simple. It is easy to have everything you need at your fingertips and everything else in the recycle bin where it belongs. You can start with a simple system of just a few files. Create a spreadsheet on an app you can access from any device such as Google Sheets.

Label column 1 "File Number", column 2 "Item", and column 3 "Purge Date".

When you need to file a document record it in the spreadsheet. When you need the document just do a search (command-f or control-f) on your spreadsheet and pull the file number you placed it in. From time to time sort your sheet by the "Purge Date" and throw out anything you no longer need. Keep the empty file folders and when you have a new document to file if there is an empty folder place it there.
